I traveled to Syria in May 2023 after 4 years of patiently waiting for them to reopen tourism to Americans. This is an incredibly special country, with so much history, incredible food, and beautiful people. Before the war, Syria was a booming economy. This life was abruptly taken away and the sanctions continue to perpetuate them.
Traveling to Syria in 2024 offers a unique opportunity to explore the culture, and resilience of the people. Syria continues to recover from years of conflict, and a visit to Syria allows travelers to support the local economy while having the trip of a lifetime.
This guide will provide essential information on planning your journey, navigating local customs, and ensuring a safe and enriching experience.
Understanding the Current Situation
Before planning your trip, it's crucial to stay informed about the current political and security landscape in Syria. Although the war officially ended in 2018, some regions still experience instability. Always check travel advisories from your government and consider consulting local experts or tour operators for the latest updates.
Many areas, particularly Damascus and Aleppo, have seen a revival of tourism and daily life. However, it's vital to remain cautious and stay updated on any potential changes in the security situation.

Visa Requirements for Syria
To enter Syria, most travelers will require a visa. However, rather than the typical process, since all foreigners need to be on a group tour, your guide will apply for the visa and you will get it on arrival.

You will most likely be driving in from Lebanon. This was handled by our guide as well. Ensure you have all necessary documents and are aware of the border crossing procedures. Border crossings can sometimes be lengthy, so patience is key.
Best Places to Visit in Syria
Damascus: The capital city is a must-visit. Explore the historic Old City, including the Umayyad Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world. Don’t miss the bustling Souk al-Hamidiyya, where you can shop for spices, textiles, and traditional crafts.
Aleppo: Once a thriving trade center, Aleppo is now in recovery. The Citadel of Aleppo, perched atop a hill, offers breathtaking views of the city. Wander through the ancient souks and experience local delicacies at vibrant eateries.
Palmyra (Tadmur): A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruins of Palmyra showcase the grandeur of ancient Roman architecture. Although the site suffered significant damage during the conflict, restoration efforts are ongoing. The ancient columns and temples tell stories of a glorious past and the cultural significance of this site.
Maaloula: This picturesque village is known for its unique Aramaic-speaking community. Visit the stunning Church of Saint Thekla, built into the mountainside, and take in the breathtaking views. The village's resilience and deep-rooted traditions make it a fascinating stop.
Bosra: Famous for its well-preserved Roman theater, Bosra offers a glimpse into the region's ancient history. The theater, still used for performances today, is a highlight. Explore the remnants of Nabatean architecture and wander through the ancient streets.
Crusader Castles: The Crak des Chevaliers is a well-preserved fortress that highlights the architectural brilliance of the Crusader period. It served as a strategic point for various armies and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This site is often considered one of the best-preserved castles in the world.
Navigating Local Customs
Dress Modestly: While Syria is known for its hospitality, dressing somewhat modestly will show respect for the Muslim population.
Women: You do not need a headscarf aside from if you visit mosques. I recommend covering shoulders and knees. However, you will probably see women wearing shorts and it will not be a problem! You can wear tank tops when visiting the ancient sites since there won't be anyone around.
Men: There is not a dress code, you can wear shorts and t-shirts.
Learn Basic Arabic Phrases: Knowing a few Arabic greetings can go a long way in connecting with locals. Simple phrases like “Marhaba” (Hello) and “Shukran” (Thank you) will be appreciated.
Photography Etiquette: Always ask permission before taking photos of people or sensitive sites, especially in rural areas. Some locals may be uncomfortable with being photographed.
Safety Tips
Stay Informed: Regularly check travel advisories and news updates during your stay. Sign up for local alerts and consider following news sources that cover Syria.
Local Guides: I recommend hiring Fadi who owns Golden Team.
Avoid Restricted Areas: Some regions may still be dangerous, or just banned by the government. Adhere to local advice and avoid areas known for conflict. It's best to travel with a reputable tour group that is aware of current safety conditions.
Health and Practical Tips
Health Precautions: Consult your healthcare provider about any necessary vaccinations before traveling to Syria. Be aware of health risks, such as waterborne diseases, and ensure you drink bottled or purified water.
Travel Insurance: Consider obtaining travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations. This will provide peace of mind during your journey.
Currency and Payment: The Syrian pound is the official currency. Credit cards are not accepted, AT ALL BECAUSE OF SANCTIONS. You must carry cash and exchange currency in advance. Local markets often offer better rates than banks.
Communication: Purchasing a local SIM can be beneficial for navigating and staying connected. Ensure your phone is unlocked to use a local network.
